Terrorists attack Glasgow

On Friday 29th June two cars filled with petrol and gas cannisters and designed to blow up and kill people in the centre of London were discovered and disarmed. At 3.15pm on Saturday two men driving a Cherokee jeep, similarly designed to explode, attempted to crash it through the front doors of terminal 1 of Glasgow Airport. It was the first day of the Scottish school holidays and the airport was full of families ready to fly out. Fortunately the doors were stubborn and the jeep burst into flames before it could be driven into the crowds. Two men emerged from the jeep, one of them on fire, and tried to throw an incendiary device at the people but it failed to reach them. Both men were than tackled and caught by members of the public and security personel. Apart from the attacker who was badly burned and a member of the public who received a leg injury while struggling with the other attacker, there were no serious injuries. Experts have said that if the jeep had succeeded in making it through the doors the injuries and loss of life could have been terrible.

It's hard to believe that my native city of Glasgow has now become a target for terrorists, but then we are part of the UK, and British troops are in Iraq and Afghanistan, so maybe we shouldn't be so shocked. The timing probably had a lot to do with it - Scotsman Gordon Brown has just taken over from Tony Blair as British Prime Minister.

Whatever the politics, whatever the grievances, I can't understand people who would deliberately target children with the intention of killing and maiming them.

US Warned of Glasgow Threat Two Weeks Ago

U.S. law enforcement officials received intelligence reports two weeks ago warning of a possible terror attack in Glasgow against "airport infrastructure or aircraft," a senior US law enforcement official tells the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

The intelligence reports also warned that airports and aircraft in the Czech Republic could be the targets of al Qaeda-connected terrorists.

The warnings were kept secret for operational reasons, according to officials. In public, the White House and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff have continued to maintain they know of no specific or credible threats involving the United States, even though the intelligence reports specify US aircraft as possible targets.

A US official told ABCNews.com that the intelligence reports led to the assignment of Federal Air Marshals to flights into and out of both Glasgow and Prague.

Air marshals had been added to flights into and out of Germany late last month, based on similar warnings.
